A corrections officer at a Minnesota state jail was killed Wednesday by an inmate, officers stated.

Officer Joseph Gomm, of the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater, was attacked by the inmate — recognized as Edward Muhammad Johnson — round 1:30 p.m., the Minnesota Division of Corrections stated.

Gomm, an officer on the jail for 16 years, was taken to a hospital, the place he was pronounced useless.

“Joseph gave the last word sacrifice whereas working to guard the residents of Minnesota,” Sarah Fitzgerald, a spokeswoman for the company, stated.

Johnson, 42, has been serving time for a murder conviction.

The correctional facility, and surrounding prisons, had been positioned beneath lockdown till officers decided the incident was over.
